  • International Pinot Noir Day: The World’s Heartbreak Grape

“God made Cabernet Sauvignon whereas the devil made Pinot Noir.” - André Tchelistcheff Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape to grow, but when it gets it right, boy oh boy, is it good. From cult followings to some of the most expensive wines in the world, Pinot Noir has it all. Red wines, sparkling wines and even white wines — Pinot Noir is one of the most versatile and important grapes in the world of wine. In fact, there’s a very good chance you’ve already enjoyed a wine containing the world’s heartbreak grape without even realising it. Pinot Noir has been cultivated in Burgundy for well over 1,000 years, but its story is certainly not confined to France. Today, it has found a home in vineyards all over the world, with each region putting its own stamp on this famously expressive grape. Oregon, California, England, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Italy and South Africa, Pinot Noir has an incredible ability to reflect where it is grown. And then there is its role in sparkling wine. Pinot Noir is one of the three key grapes of Champagne, alongside Chardonnay and Meunier, proving that this temperamental little grape can do far more than simply make red wine. It can even be used to produce white wine. Why is it called the heartbreak grape? Quite simply, Pinot Noir is fussy. Its thin skins, tight bunches and early ripening make it particularly susceptible to disease, rot, frost and difficult weather. It can be frustratingly unpredictable in the vineyard, and even when everything goes right, it still demands plenty of care. But that's also part of the magic. When Pinot Noir is grown in the right place and treated well, it can produce wines of incredible perfume, elegance and complexity. It is also a grape with an extraordinary family tree. Pinot Noir has naturally crossed with Gouais Blanc to produce Chardonnay, and has played a role in the ancestry of several other varieties. It has also mutated extensively over centuries, giving us the huge number of Pinot clones and related varieties found around the world today. From Burgundy's legendary vineyards to the vineyards of England (and, of course, the bottles sitting on our shelves) Pinot Noir continues to captivate wine lovers everywhere. The devil may have made Pinot Noir, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

  • Four Wines Made for Barbecue Season

There’s something special about cooking over fire. The smoky aromas, the caramelised edges, the relaxed pace of eating outdoors – barbecue season calls for wines that are every bit as generous and full of character as the food on the grill. At Broadway Cellars, we love discovering bottles that overdeliver on flavour and pair effortlessly with good food. Whether you’re cooking for family, entertaining friends or simply making the most of a sunny evening, these four wines deserve a place at your table. Southend Chardonnay | Newton Johnson A barbecue isn’t just about red wine. Newton Johnson’s Southend Chardonnay is beautifully balanced, offering ripe orchard fruit, a smooth, gently buttery texture and a subtle hint of vanilla. There’s enough richness to complement grilled chicken or pork, while its freshness keeps every sip lively alongside smoky flavours from the barbecue. £21.95 McLaren Vale Grenache Rosé | Willunga 100 Rosé has earned its place as one of summer’s most versatile food wines, and this is a brilliant example. Willunga 100’s McLaren Vale Grenache Rosé is packed with juicy red berry fruit, giving it more depth than many pale rosés. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully moreish, it’s the bottle you’ll keep reaching for throughout the afternoon. £17.95 Carignan IGP Côtes de Thau | Baron de Badassière Some reds are made for sunshine, and this is one of them. Bright, approachable and full of soft red fruit, Baron de Badassière’s Carignan comes alive with a light chill. It has just enough freshness to balance smoky, charred flavours, making it an ideal companion for everything from sausages to grilled vegetables. £12.95 ‘Trinca Bolotas’ Alentejo Tinto | Herdade do Peso When the steaks hit the grill, reach for a wine with a little more muscle. Bursting with ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum, ‘Trinca Bolotas’ has the richness and structure to stand alongside beautifully grilled beef. Bold, generous and packed with fruit, it’s a crowd-pleaser that never loses its sense of balance. £15.95 Great wine doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. Sometimes the best bottle is simply the one that brings everyone together around the table. From a rich South African Chardonnay and a vibrant Australian Rosé to a lightly chilled French Carignan and a bold Portuguese red, these wines each bring something different to the barbecue. Whichever is on your menu this summer, you’ll find a bottle that’s ready to match it. Pop into Broadway Cellars and let us help you discover your next favourite. After all, the best wines aren’t just enjoyed – they’re shared.

  • Finding the Perfect Pour: How We Select Our Wines

Choosing the wines we offer is both a passion and a responsibility. It’s a process that blends curiosity, experience, and collaboration—plus plenty of tasting along the way. We taste a lot of wines. It’s the only way to stay connected to what’s happening in the wine world, from classic regions to up-and-coming producers. When we taste, we’re looking for more than just good flavour. We want wines with character, balance, and a sense of place. Wines that tell a story. Whether it’s a well-known label or something completely off the beaten track, each wine needs to bring something special to the table. Our experience plays a big role, too. Over the years, we’ve developed a clear sense of what works - what our customers love, what pairs well with food, and what stands out in a crowd. That knowledge helps us make confident, informed choices without relying on trends or hype. Just as important is the input we get from our network of trusted suppliers, importers, and friends in the industry. These relationships often lead us to hidden gems and small producers doing amazing things. We value their insight and use it to dig deeper and explore beyond the obvious. Ultimately, every wine we select is one we believe in - something we’d be proud to serve and excited to share. Our goal is to offer a thoughtful, evolving selection that celebrates quality, diversity, and craftsmanship. Whether you're a casual drinker or a devoted wine lover, we hope you find something that speaks to you.
